What is Prosthodontics?

Prosthetics is derived from the word 'Prosthesis', which is essentially an artificial replacement for a missing part of the body. The purpose is to replace form, function and esthetics as much as possible to the original, so that the patients are able to lead a more normal life.

* Prosthodontics > Prosthesis : Branch of dentistry that deals with replacement of missing tooth/ teeth and surrounding tissues either by fixed , semi-fixed or removable methods including dental implants.

** Maxillofacial Prosthetics: is a sub specialty of Prosthodontics where patients are treated by prosthesis for replacement of even more greater loss of tissue. For example these may be patients who have had facial trauma, post-op cancer patients and cleft palate patients.

*** Dental Implants are dental fixtures made of titanium and are implanted into the jaw bones. Using this as a support, missing teeth may be replaced. Where proper case selections is made, this procedure though a little expensive, it is surprisingly very successful and not as painful as it appears.
